How Guyana Was Made
Guyana is a place of deep, deep social fractures. It has the 20th highest homicide rate in the world, almost three times the global average. Almost anywhere here in the capital city it’s strongly advised not to walk alone at night.
So how did this tiny paradise get so violent? Unlike Brazil or Colombia or El Salvador, the story of Guyana is a little different. This video looks at how the Europeans smashed together the people of three different continents to create this little colony of sugar.

The Guianas: South America's Weirdest Countries?
Переглядів 1,7 млн2 місяці тому
At the top of South America are three small territories. Until about ten years ago, not a single road connected them to the outside world. They are some of the world’s least talked about places and yet all three have interesting stories to tell. Stories of sugar and slavery, calypso and cults. In this series of videos I’m going to tell the story, of the Guianas... Books - John Gimlette, Wild Co...
Kandy Esala Perahera

Every July and August in Kandy in the highlands of Sri Lanka, a very special festival is held. At the centre of Kandy is the Temple of the Tooth, home of the Tooth Relic, the holiest relic in all of Sri Lanka as it’s supposed to be one of the teeth of Buddha himself. According to legend, it was brought to the island sometime in the fourth century and, taken care of by the Sinhalese kings, and s...

In early 2009, hundreds of thousands of civilians were trapped on a few square kilometers of beach in northern Sri Lanka. Much of what followed is disputed, but this video tells the story of what happened to those civilians and why in the brutal, bloody final days of the Sri Lankan Civil War. Who were the Tamil Tigers?

Between 1983 and 2009, Sri Lanka was engulfed in Civil War. There was one group above all who would dominate this conflict. Their name would become infamous around the world as they fought for a Tamil homeland on an island dominated by a Sinhalese majority. Using suicide squads and child soldiers they would fight the world’s fourth largest army to a standstill and assassinated presidents and pr...

The JVP Insurrections

In the early 1970s and 1980s two insurgencies stalked the countryside of southern Sri Lanka. They were horrifyingly brutal, and yet few in the outside world know about them. Inspired by a utopian Marxist ideology, the JVP carried out a campaign of terror, and yet this was dwarfed by the government's response. This video covers both JVP insurrections, and discusses how this shaped the relationsh...

Thanks for making this video. It's amazing how you have managed to learn the distinction of Uzbek and Tajik, Sedentary and Nomadic lifestyles as well as how many of nomadic tribes basically were Tajikified voluntarily by themselves. Language, it's quite fascinating, but there are many Tajiks in Tajikistan who speak Uzbek and also plenty of Uzbek people in Uzbekistan, particularly in Ferghana Valley who speak fluent Tajik. I believe most of Tajiks don't know much about Tajik history as much as you have learned about us. You highlighted crucial facts about language, sedentary lifestyle as well as religion. It's quite sad to see there are so many Tajiks in the region but all live in different countries. To all my Tajik fellows, as well as those who identify himself/herself as Tajik. Let our work talk for us. We are hardworking and diligent people. I was amazed by energy of Tajik people when I worked in Tajikistan for 4 years. Truly inspiring how hard people work for their families. Love it! Kudos to all hardworking people of Tajikistan. May you all stay healthy and excel at your field of work, Hamvatanon!

I got an itch to look up the LTTE - I think i fell into the rabbit hoe by reading up on separatist movements recently. Found your channel. Really good stuff. I wish I'd have come up with it when I was in college, also studying history, political science and the like. A quick scan shows you have videos on Sri Lanka, Tajikistan and Guatemala. Good on you for researching and putting together updated analysis on these regions that don't get as much sunshine as others.

The Tajik people are indeed an integral part of Central Asian history and culture, with a rich heritage that spans millennia. Here's some informative information about the Tajik people: 1. History and Culture: The Tajik people have a history dating back thousands of years, with roots in ancient civilizations such as the Bactrians and Sogdians. Their culture is influenced by Persian, Turkic, and other Central Asian traditions, resulting in a diverse tapestry of customs, language, and arts. 2. Contributions to Science, Medicine, and Astrology: Tajik scholars have made significant contributions to various fields throughout history. In medieval times, the Persian-speaking scholars of Central Asia, including Tajiks, played a crucial role in preserving and advancing knowledge in fields such as mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and philosophy during the Islamic Golden Age. 3. Literature and Poetry: Persian poetry has a rich tradition within Tajik culture. Renowned poets like Rumi, Omar Khayyam, and Ferdowsi have greatly influenced Tajik literature, with Tajik poets contributing their own works to this illustrious tradition. 4. Philosophy: Tajik thinkers have made notable contributions to philosophy, particularly in the realms of Sufism, mysticism, and Islamic philosophy. Their philosophical writings have often reflected a deep contemplation of existence, spirituality, and the human condition. 5. Population in Afghanistan: Tajiks constitute a significant portion of Afghanistan's population, particularly in urban centers such as Kabul, Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, Kunduz, and Ghazni. They have historically played prominent roles in various spheres of Afghan society, including politics, academia, and commerce. 6. Elites in Afghanistan: Tajiks have been prominent figures in Afghanistan's political and intellectual landscape. Many Tajik leaders have emerged in the country's history, contributing to its governance and development. Tajik intellectuals and professionals have also played key roles in shaping Afghanistan's modern institutions and educational systems. Overall, the Tajik people's contributions to the world span a wide range of disciplines and have left an indelible mark on human civilization, particularly in the regions where they have historically resided, including Afghanistan.

I think you really need to change how you said "the British could be blamed for giving Sri Lanka Independence.." No, for COLONISING and creating ethnic tensions and conflicts in their colonial divide & rule policies. Cmon.. This is Colonialism 101; hence 99% of all ex-colonial countries have suffered from ethnic sociopolitical conflicts (among many other things.) You did touch on it briefly by saying they shouldn't have had an empire at all, and that it is self-evident. But that was too easy. Should have explained how colonialism is the root in so many modern conflicts and tensions.

Very well done - but one minor point - you include some fixed images, maps, etc - but they're only there for between 1 and 2 seconds (?), which is fine for the super-human under 30 year-olds who can absorb a thousand images swiped past on a tiny screen. But for some of us there's no point including things if we can't see what they are without a finger poised over the pause button throughout. As a UA-camr myself I appreciate it's a difficult compromise - my uncles say my films are too fast, my nephews say they're too laborious!

I am in university studying to be a high school geography/social studies teacher. I always try to think of area of the world that are not of Africa where my ancestors are, or America the culture I have grown up. When it comes to where Sri Lanka. It seems as if it’s never mentioned because where it is on the map. This area of the world is where humans turned into two different kinds of people. The people who like Indians and Sri Lanka and then east oriental. Where Myanmar is. I have never met anybody from Sri Lanka, seen anything about it on the news or anything related to it. This video taught me a lot and has given me a reason to always remember Sri Lanka. I hope to see it in real life one day.
